Project log 31/10/13

Today, I have been filming all day at various locations for my music video, such as: Georgina's home, Elmbridge close, the alley-way near Coteford Infant school, The Fairway restaurant and more. I have completed filming all of the narrative shots for my music video which I am so pleased about, and now I only have to film my performance shots of Georgina in the woods, which will be done on Monday since both me and Georgina have half-days on this day. Since returning home today, I have also created a picture location video on Windows Movie Maker, as I took many photos of the locations today. I uploaded this to YouTube and embedded it onto my blog. I feel as if today was a really productive, successful day. Below are some photos of me filming today.

Furthermore, here is also a photo of the notes I created before I began filming. I produced these notes so that I was clear and organised on how I wanted today to be structured:

Production process of my album advert SO FAR

This is the process I have reported on the production of my album advert so far. I have created this on a Powerpoint document, and decided to add the date on a new slide of each time I make changes to the advert so that the examiner can properly monitor my progress and see how far I have gotten. I have also added and described the draft of my album poster. It is almost like a mini diary, where I explain the changes I make along the way and why I have made them. I have also added the initial draft of my digipak so my intentions are clear.
Along the way I have added a lot to this document as of course, I have been making changes to my album advert and a lot of progress consistently, so I have made sure that this is up to date.

Video mood board

I have already created a picture mood board, however, looking back I decided that I wanted to improve on my mood board and create a video version instead. So, I downloaded several pop music videos which I believed held many typical pop conventions, through a site called "www.keepvid.com", imported them onto Adobe Premiere Pro, downloaded an MP3 of my music video song "Guns and Horses" by Ellie Goulding, downloaded a few more images of outfits and images I thought fitted in with my music video, and put them all together in one. I made sure to cut and edit each music video into the most interesting parts and made it switch from one to another, so it looked interesting and eye-catching. Overall I think this is a successful mood board as it portrays all of the aspects and conventions I believe convey "pop" as a whole and those that I would like to adapt into my own music video.

Structure & shot ideas for music video

This is a shot idea document I have created on Microsoft Word. It is not an official descriptive shot list or storyboard, however since completely changing the concept ideas for my music video I gathered I should start creating some brief draft ideas for the structure of my music video and the shots that are going to be in it. Of course I will create an official shot list soon once I am 100% sure on what shots I am using at what times. However, so getting down these brief shot ideas has really helped me progress because I now feel a lot more organised and head-clear in what I am doing in my music video and how it will be structured.

Project log 18/10/13

Transcript:

This is my project log for the 18th October 2013. Today I've just basically been doing a lot of my research tasks, and yesterday I was off school ill so I've just basically been using my time wisely to finish off my research tasks and I've managed to finish all of them so I'm really pleased about that as it means I can now get ahead with my music video. I've completed my risk assessment which was quite a helpful  task because it helped me establish all of the different health and safety issues I might have with my music video and how I can prevent these from happening. Also I've done an analysis of a previous A2 music video, so that's just basically made me look at different ways in which students have made their music videos successful and I have analysed Roberto's, so that was quite helpful. I have finally uploaded my storyboard also, but I've basically changed all of my ideas for my music video now so it means that I'm going to have to re-do my storyboard again at some point, but I have uploaded this original storyboard. The new ideas I have for my music video are that it's still going to be half narrative, half performance-based and it's still going to be the same song. But I'm just going to use my actress walking through the woods and then she'll pick up different props that will be in her pathway, and each time she picks up a prop it will merge into a flashback that relates to the prop. The narrative part will basically be "5 stages of a relationship", and it will be her previous relationship with her ex-boyfriend. It will show flashbacks of each stage, e.g the heartbreak stage, the comfortable stage, the nervous/excited/early stage, and each prop will link to each stage. However, the audience will not know until the end that the props are actually a figure of the girl's imagination because she is experiencing almost post-trauma from her break-up as she is heartbroken. So that is my idea which is going to be quite hard to do, but I think it will work if I put a lot of work into it. I have also done voki creations of my actors that I'm going to be using, so I've basically just done a brief outline of what sort of people my actors are and things like that just to give the audience an insight. I have also done the "influence of music genre" task. I have re-done my lyric annotations because I felt as if my previous lyric annotations were not as great as they could be, so I have re-done them on a word document so that they look a lot better. Also I have realised that my picture mood-board that I completed quite a while ago isn't really that great, it could have a lot more work done to it, so I've started creating a mood board video instead, which is being created on Adobe Premiere Pro. I've completed this but there's been a few technical difficulties with that because it's not exporting so I'm going to have to ask the teacher about that. Also, I have added alterations to quite a lot of my previous tasks because obviously I have changed quite a lot of my ideas now to a completely different concept of my music video, so of course I need to inform the examiner that there's been a lot of changes and what changes have been made.
I also filmed on Wednesday and I got several first shots for my narrative done for Georgina and Matt. The majority of the shots were done in Georgina's room, so I basically almost finished the "first stage" of the relationship, which was the nervous/excited stage of the relationship. This is where I filmed shots of her getting ready, throwing clothes around, doing her make-up and things like this. I also filmed the "first time they met" and went on a date together. Georgina has a bar in her back garden so I filmed them in the bar together, but I used a certain angle so that it looked professional. I attempted to film that but the camera ran out of battery so I will have to continue that soon. However I am quite pleased with the shots I have filmed so far and I plan on continuing to film hopefully next Wednesday because that's the next time Matt has off work, so hopefully I can get the majority of my filming done then. Then on the performing-side of my music video, I will be doing a lot of them shots with just Georgina so that she does not get distracted by Matt, and I will most likely be filming them next week some time.

Influences of the pop genre

This is a powerpoint I have created on explaining the influences of pop music. I explained why I chose this genre for my music video, artists of this genre, a brief outline of the pop genre's history and how it began, the influences of pop, and what made the pop genre come along in the early 1900s. Creating this powerpoint/completing this task was very beneficial for me because it gave me a deeper insight into the history of pop which I did not know a lot about before, and how it can effect its audience which was very interesting.

Risk assessment

Above is a risk assessment I have completed on Microsoft Word, listing the risk types there could be with the production of my music video, the details of the risks, ways to minimize the risks and who is responsible for them. Completing this task has opened my eyes as to the ways my music video could go wrong or how the production of it could be altered or slowed down, and the ways in which people could get injured. So, completing it has been beneficial because now I have realised the ways in which I can prevent this from happening so that everyone is safe and things can run smoothly.

Analysis of a previous A2 music video

Roberto Manfredi's A2 music video

This music video starts off with what sounds like diagetic sound of a tape recorder being put on, with visual faded lights on the screen. I think this starts the music video off very well indeed because it adds a realistic feel to it, making us, the audience, feel as if we are being "plugged in" to a different world. What accentuates this even more so is that you can see a human figure in the background fiddling with the tape player, which I believe is effective as it makes the viewer almost feel as if the soundtrack is "live" and there is effort being put into it. Then, as the acoustic instrumental begins, the audience are started off with a blurry blue coloured shot of some fingers plucking at some guitar strings. As the camera pans up the guitar, the blurriness gradually begins to fade, however watching this almost made me feel like a lot of it was mysterious. I liked this because I think one of the most important aspects you could have in your music video is to persuade the audience to question it.
Then, we are presented with a reoccurring shot of half of a boy's face miming to the music which we now establish is the performance-based part, however it is only half of his face, he looks like he's lying down staring up at the cieling as he mimes, and around him is blood smeared on white walls. The shot overall has a red effect to it, representing a morbid, dark feeling to it which really matches the song's dark vibe. Then, the narrative kicks off. A man in a suit walks into a white bathroom, chucking his blazer on the side. I really love how a very high camera angle is used, because there is almost a distance created between the audience and the actor, highlighting the mystery I had mentioned at the beginning. Meanwhile, there are reoccurring shots of what looks like music equipment but it is hard to make out, with a very red and black effect added to it, again exaggerating the aloofness and morbidity. There are some really smart, interesting camera angles Roberto has used which I find particularly inspiring. These are for example a fish-eye camera sort of effect, where it is only videoing the bottom half of the actor's legs, yet it is so effective because the audience do not know what his top half is doing, and this adds to that mysterious feel because the song is so dark. There is also a slow motion effect added to when the actor's legs begin to move, which suits the slow pace of the start of the song.
The audience are brought back in and out of the performance and narrative shots. There are shots of the piano playing, the music tape, lights, the guitar and more are used to create a feeling that the song is being performed "live" which is really effective. If you look closely, Roberto has also paid very close attention to the mise-en-scene of his shots to create a strong contrast between the performance and narrative ones. In the performance shots, a lot of blue and red is used, whereas in the narrative ones, a lot of red and white is used.
I particularly loved the shot where Roberto must have used an under-water camera to film the actor cleaning his hands in the water. This was quirky and different, and it portrays that a lot of effort and thought has been put into the music video. As this shot is being filmed, the camera sort of shakes around a lot to represent uneasiness and loss of stability. Aswell as this, now there are links between the blood shown on the walls and the washing of hands, things begin to make sense - maybe there is a reason why the actor is washing off his hands. We can see now how the narrative is slowly building with suspension, adding in clues on the way through. This slow, tension-filled narrative is extremely smart.
Roberto has also used Andrew Goodwin's theory of a correlation between the lyrics and the visuals in a lot of the shots. However this is particularly highlighted in the shot where the lyrics state "got someone waiting at home for me, staring at the door" and the audience are presented with a dark, quick shot of a man in a suit in a small room, staring into space. This shot is fast but effective as it is quite "freaky" and again, it makes the viewer question "why" and what's happening.
The suspension is built up as we follow the main protagonist character on their journey to a place we do not know, the shots dark and mysterious, and inbetween we are shown performance shots of an actor miming, but they are only ones of half of his face such as his lips. I noticed something more than half way through the video, too, that the song always refers to "shadows", and this is exactly what Roberto portrays in the video. He is constantly showing shots of shadows and darkness, and this correlation is really effective because the song suits the visuals so much.
During the build up, the audience are almost informed that the "beat is going to drop" because we are shown shots of buttons on the music equipment being turned up etc., which leads up to a massive climax. Suddenly, there are loads of fast shots used with the red effect on them, and most of these shots are finally performance-based. The idea I took from this is that perhaps suddenly the shots are all performance-based is because he wants the audience to really enjoy the music through being shown these different instruments and to accentuate that it's "live". I also noticed that now there has been a climax, we are suddenly being shown the actor's full face in the red effect as he mimes to the camera. It is almost as if he is finally being revealed to us. On the final shot, there is a hand-held shot of the corner of the bathtub we were shown before, with blood all over it. There was no resolution to the narrative of the music video and we as the audience never really find out what actually happened in the narrative, which I think really adds to the mystery about it and it makes you question it.
Overall I think that this music video was brilliant. I believe Roberto really put a lot of thought into it and the ideas he put into the building of tension to the final climax was really effective. The miming was successful, and the pace of shots was brilliant because each shot fitted each beat perfectly, and everything was synchronised. Finally, the fact that Roberto used only one character throughout the music video is great because it means you can focus on one person and the tension is accentuated. Overall, a really successful music video. It kept my attention the whole way through.

Project log 14/10/13

Today was actually a really interesting lesson because I have walked out of it with a different mindset towards my music video. Our exam media teacher wasn't in today, so instead of going home I stayed for the two periods and used my time wisely, completing coursework. As I did this coursework I was thinking about the concept of my music video and its storyline, and realised that actually the storyline might be quite boring for the audience as there isn't a massive anticipated climax. So, I asked a teacher Mr Fisher on what his opinion was on my ideas and how I could improve him, and he helped me a lot as he gave me many great ideas to play with. A few of these ideas were:

  • rewind the narrative. Start from the end, end with the start
  • use props as a main aspect to the music video. For example, do a narrative where a girl is walking through her room and as she picks up each prop, it links back to a flashback that relates to it of her and Matt's relationship
  • do a music video where it shows Georgina's 'split personality' - 3 sides to her personality = 3 different people. So, her in different costumes showing a different personality, and how she reacts to her and Matts' relationship is different in each
I have taken deeply into consideration these ideas and am now looking to really think about my song carefully and see how I can incorporate a few of these ideas to make my music video's storyline better. At the end of the day, the main aim of my music video is to engage the audience, and if I feel like I am not going to do this with my current ideas for storylining, then clearly I will improve this as much as I can to fit the aim.
After thinking a bit about this, I might try and re-do a whole storyboard again to give me a clear view of what shots I need to use etc so that I am not confused and disorganised on the scheduled filming days. However, in this case I need to make this storyboard soon if I'm going to as I have scheduled to film soon this week.
Tonight I also plan on completing all of my research tasks and clearing up my blog.

Progress report video 10/10/13

This is a progress report video I was filmed presenting on the lesson of the 10th October. I basically just showed some aspects of my blog to the class, showing how far I have gotten/what progress I have made. I then imported this video onto Adobe Premiere and added some pictures/examples of what I am talking about to make the presentation a lot more interesting. Then I exported the video and uploaded it onto YouTube, then embedding it onto here.
I found this task particularly helpful because it actually showed myself how far I have gotten and how much work I need to do. It also allowed me to see other people talking about the progress they have made so far, which motivated me even more so to do more work and get to where I want to be in this project.

Pictures of location

This is a video I created on Windows Movie Maker at home with the pictures I have taken of the locations used in my music video. I added a caption before each location, introducing the location and explaining how I used them each. I also added the "Guns & Horses" soundtrack to the video by Ellie Goulding, as this is the song I am using for my music video. I plan to add on this within time as of course I am still filming my music video so there will be more locations to come.

Raw footage of location (KEEP ADDING TO THIS)

These are the raw pieces of video footage I have taken of each location.

Location 1: Ruislip Woods

I took this footage in one of my locations which was Ruislip Woods. This was were the majority of the performance footage was taken. There were quite a few pieces of footage taken of here so I put the videos together on Windows Movie Maker and uploaded the full video to YouTube.

Location 2: Eastcode fields

This footage was taken in Eastcote fields where I filmed my second actress, Jessica, performing her gymnastics. There were quite a few pieces of footage taken of here so I put the videos together on Windows Movie Maker and uploaded the full video to YouTube.

Location 3: Elmbridge Close (down Georgina's road)

I used this location to film the couple meeting for the first time and about to leave to go on their first date.

Location 4: Georgina's kitchen

I used this location in my music video for the shots where the couple are cooking together and play fighting, representing the "comfortable/inlove" stage of their relationship.

Location 5: Georgina's hallway

I used this location to film Georgina about to leave to go and meet Matt to go on their first date.

Location 6: Georgina's room

This is the location I used for a lot of my music video, for example the distrust stage and the beginning stage where Georgina is getting dressed to go on her first date with Matt.

Location 7: The Fairway restaurant

I filmed the couple's first date at this restaurant, as fortunately Matt works there and was able to hire out the bar upstairs for us to use for filming.

Location 8: The alley-way near Coteford Infant School

Location 9: Georgina's garden

Location 10: Georgina's lounge

I used this location in my music video for the shots where the couple are watching TV together, "chilling" and play-fighting, representing the "comfortable/inlove" stage of their relationship.

Location 11: Ruislip woods

Project log 10/10/13

Today I have not been in school, so I have taken it upon myself to do some work on my music video. I wanted to test what the slow motion effect and black and white effect would look like on some of the artistic shots I created of my actress Jessica doing her gymnastics, and what the outcome would be, for example whether it would look professional or not. So, knowing that of course I would not be editing my final music video on Windows Movie Maker, I was at home and decided to use simply Windows Movie Maker to test some effects on some of these shots, just to make some progress. I have uploaded the contents to YouTube and embedded it here, just to show what it looks like. Overall I am quite impressed with the results as I believe the effects make the shots look quite artistic, and now I know what some of them will look like in my final music video.

Furthermore, after this I decided I really wanted to test some of my first shots with the soundtrack on Windows Movie Maker just to see what it looks like and how it pans out. It actually worked out quite well, however I know that some shots are quite shaky, the cropping and timing could be better, and I could improve the colour and quality of some as they do not all match and some are quite blurry. However of course this was just a test and I will be improving on all these aspects when I have filmed everything and finally begin to start editing them all on Adobe Premiere Pro.

After this, I also put together the pieces of raw footage I have of the locations for my music video and uploaded them. Then I also uploaded the pictures I had taken of the locations.

Overall I think today I have made quite a lot of progress as I have now got an idea for what my music video will look like, what improvements I need to make and how I will do this.

Testing/editing some of the first shots for my music video, simply using Windows Movie Maker

I was at home and dedcided to simply use Windows Movie Maker to test and see what some of my first shots will look like in my music video with the soundtrack. I am fully aware that I will not be using Windows Movie Maker to create my final music video - I will be using Adobe Premiere Pro - but I just simply wanted to see what some of it would look like.

Adding effects to some of my shots for my music video

Project log 09/10/13

Today in lesson, I finished working on my script which I was very pleased about because now I feel a lot more organised. The only problem was that I couldn't upload it to Scribd, so I tried a website called Issuu and it didn't work on here either, and then I tried creating an account on SlideShare but this wouldn't work either. So I figured I would have to go onto my school account through Haydon WebLinks when I get home and upload it from my home computer. The previous lesson, we as a class all recorded us individually performing a progress report to the class, showing how far we had gotten with our music videos and what we had done on our blogs. So, today I imported my video to Adobe Premiere Pro and began working on this, adding pictures and effects, etc., but soon this coursework lesson was over.

Now I am home, I have uploaded my script to my blog, aswell as my filming schedule which I uploaded onto SlideShare after I created an account on it because I want to use more different presentation techniques, and I also took it upon myself to create a video on Windows Movie Maker about the costumes I used for my actors in the filming of my music video. I uploaded this to YouTube and embedded it onto my blog. I thought this was great progress I have made because creating this video enables the audience to have an insight on what my motives were behind creating my actor's/actresses' looks.

I am just having a look at my A2 checklist now, to find that I have only two more research tasks left to complete, and a few more planning tasks which I have already started. You can see this below:

Filming schedule

This is a schedule I have created on Powerpoint, showing what dates and times I plan on filming. For each filming day, I have also stated the location of the filming and who I will be filming with. This task was actually really good help towards my music video as it helped me plan out exactly when I am filming so that I feel a lot more organised.

Costumes used in my music video

I was aware that I didn't have to create a presentation showing the costumes/look I have used for my actors but I wanted to, just to show an insight to my motives. This is a video I have created on a program called Windows Movie Maker at home which presents all shots I took whilst at filming of all of my actor's costumes. In the video I explain why I chose these costumes for each actor and what look it will create.

The script for my coursework music video "Guns and Horses"

This is the script for my music video "Guns and Horses" by Ellie Goulding. I created this script on a program called Celtx. I was new to this program as I had never been introduced to it before, however, after receiving some help from the teacher, I was fine with being able to work it. The script consists of the location of the shot I will use, the action that will take place at this time, then the dialogue/lyrics that go with it so that I know exactly what time this shot will take place whilst filming. I thought that making this script was really helpful and a big part towards the making of my music video because I can print out this script and give it to all three of my actors/actresses so that they know exactly what they are doing and how to act in the filming. I uploaded this script to Issuu and then embedded it on here, so that it is easy to navigate through. I was aware that I didn't have to create a script for my coursework but I wanted to purely because I believe it will help me.

*Alterations*

Since producing this script, I have made many changes to the idea of my music video. My music video will still be half narrative, half performance based. The performance part will be my female actress Georgina walking through the woods, the camera following her, and she mimes to the song after having "just been through a break up", finding random props laying on the floor in her path as she goes along. However, these props are actually figures of her imagination, even though the viewers will still be able to see the props. Each time she curiously picks up a prop, it will merge into a flashback of her last relationship. This will happen each time with the props where they link to a "stage" of her relationship since I want to portray the "5 stages of a relationship" through these flashbacks. This will of course be the narrative part of the music video where Matt, my other actor comes into it. Then, each time it will go back to the performance and Georgina will realise that the "prop" in her hand has dissappeared and isn't actually really there, so she will continue her journey in the woods.

Natural makeup time lapse of my main protagonist actress

This is a tutorial/time-lapse I have created on the natural make-up I applied to my main protagonist actress before we did some of our filming on friday. I got my friend Jessica to film us as I applied the make-up to Georgina's face with a Canon 550D camera. Then, after taking some videos and pictures, I uploaded these to my computer and then onto Windows Movie Maker, where I added them all together, sped them up so that the viewers wouldn't become bored, added some music and uploaded it here onto YouTube.
I thought it was a good idea to create this make-up tutorial as it gives the audience an insight as to how I wanted my actress to look and how I created her look.

Project log 01/10/13

Transcript:

Today in our lesson we just did progress reports on how far we've gotten so far and what we've done, so I basically spoke about the filming I did on Friday and how far I've gotten with this. Also I showed the locations I'm planning to use and the effect this would have on my music video. At the moment I'm working on my script for my music video so that I can give this to my actors so they know exactly what they need to do in my music video. Tonight I plan on finishing the rest of my research so that I know exactly what I need to do for my music video, and this is the same with the planning aswell. I plan on continuing my filming either at the end of this week or at the start of next week probably.
